Driving a vehicle will require a valid number plate and there are various colours of number plates that are used in India. Each colour signifies different usage of the vehicle and it is mandatory to adhere to the colour of the number plate of the vehicle.

Number plates are not only a legal requirement for driving a vehicle in India, but also an identification for the vehicle. According to the Motor Vehicle Act, of 1988, all vehicles must be registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Driving an unregistered vehicle or without a number plate can lead to heavy fines.

Usually, the first two letters of the number plate will signify the state where the vehicle is registered or permitted to drive. For example, if the vehicle is registered in Tamil Nadu, it will have TN and if it is in Karnataka it will have KA.

 

Following the alphabet, the numbers denote the Regional Transport Office (RTO), where the vehicle is registered.

 

The validity of the temporary number plates is usually 30 days and after that period, permanent number plates will be issued. The colour will be fixed according to the usage of the vehicle, whether it is used for commercial or personal purposes.

 

The red number plate is valid only till the permanent registration is issued. If it is used above the temporary period, hefty fines will be applied.
